If the deadline is 31 March, why does my current practising certificate show it is valid until 30 April?

The practising certificate year runs from 1 April to 31 March each year. Renewals must be completed by 31 March to be on time for the new practising year (in accordance with Rule S62 in the BSB Handbook).

The 30 April deadline is a one-month grace period for any genuine issues a barrister may have had whilst trying to renew. It is not intended to be used as an unofficial extension of the 31 March deadline.

With that in mind, a list of those persistently late renewals, renewing after the 31 March deadline from the previous three years, will be passed over to the Bar Standards Board Supervision Department.

If it is your intention to continue in practice you will need to log into MyBar and complete the Authorisation to Practise process.
